Shane Bieber

Shane Bieber

Summary:
Shane Bieber returned to Cy Young-level form during 2024 Spring Training—sitting 93–95 mph and striking out 20 while walking just one. And he did it all with a torn UCL.

Before Training:
After two seasons of declining fastball velocity and reduced curveball bite, Bieber wasn’t looking like the same pitcher who dominated in 2020. His physical tools were slipping, and the league was adjusting. His changeup had also become less usable, lacking depth and consistency.

What We Worked On:

  • Velocity Recovery: Rebuilt his delivery around intent and freedom to regain fastball velocity

  • Curveball Restoration: Re-established 12–6 shape with sharp depth, bringing it back to 2020 Cy Young form

  • Changeup Development: Began reshaping the pitch with the goal of increasing depth and separation—still in progress heading into 2025

  • Mental Clarity: Strengthened confidence in his arsenal even while pitching injured

Key Metrics:

  • Fastball Velocity (Spring 2024): 93–95 mph

  • Strikeouts to Walks (Start of 2024): 20 K / 1 BB

  • Run Allowed in Final 28 Innings (Spring + Season): Just 1 earned run

  • Cy Young Odds Shift: 60-to-1 → 9-to-1 by second regular season start

Reflection:
Even pitching through a torn UCL, Bieber reminded everyone what his floor looks like. With his velocity back, curveball dialed in, and changeup still evolving, he’s on track to return as a front-line starter for the Guardians in mid-2025.
