Zack Greinke

Zack Greinke

Summary:
Zack Greinke trained with us during the 2022–2023 offseason. At 39 years old, he came in throwing 92 in the cage—unsure if he was going to play again, but still curious. Still open. Still Greinke. You don’t coach him. You converse. You collaborate. And you sure as hell don’t bend the truth.

Before Training:
He was coming off a season with declining strikeout totals and fewer weapons. His curveball wasn’t playing the same, and his margin was narrowing. He showed up anyway—quietly searching for what might give him one more edge.

What We Worked On:

  • Sweeper Development: It took some time, but he bought in. It became his best-performing pitch in 2023

  • Grip Recovery: Midseason, in May 2023, he texted for his old changeup grip. Got it back. His words: “I’m nasty again.”

  • Low-Touch Support: No programming. No agenda. Just a shared understanding, and space to work

Key Metrics:

  • Pitch Performance: Sweeper led his pitch mix by run prevention metrics

  • Changeup Return: Movement and effectiveness jumped after reestablishing grip in mid-May 2023

  • In-Cage Velo (Nov 2022): 92 mph while debating retirement

  • Durability: 27 appearances, nearly 150 IP at age 39

  • Advanced Data Note: By Stuff+ and Pitching+ models available at the time, Greinke was a better pitcher in 2023 than 2022—his decline in outcomes stemmed largely from curveball luck, not skill erosion

Reflection:
Greinke doesn’t need a coach. What he needs is signal—something that passes his internal test. If what you say is calculated and it computes, he’ll act on it. Odds are, he’s already tried it.

He’s not one for excess talk. But when he speaks, everyone listens. In that gym, he had quiet authority over every athlete—and over me, too. I didn’t direct his process. I earned the right to be a part of it.
